How does an association know its initiative is sponsorship-ready?

Before approaching sponsors, five readiness elements decide whether an initiative is presentable. A practical checklist to test your readiness.

Sponsorship isn’t a donation — it’s an investment decision for the sponsor. Pitching before readiness is complete weakens your odds and spends a relationship you may not get a second shot at.

Five readiness elements

  1. A clear value proposition: what exactly does the sponsor gain — visibility, impact, reach to a segment?
  2. Measurable impact indicators: what will you prove to the sponsor once the sponsorship ends?
  3. Tiered packages: options that fit different support sizes, not a single number.
  4. A disciplined narrative: a story that links need to solution to impact without exaggeration.
  5. Operational readiness: a real ability to execute, document and report.

Test your initiative

If two or more of these are missing, the initiative likely needs Support & Sponsorship Readiness before approaching anyone — followed by building the Smart Sponsor Package.

The goal isn’t to dress up the pitch, but to give the sponsor a clear decision they can defend inside their own organization.
